As I sat in my office in Fulton Hall last week, I could hear the festivities outside my window as the Snake Invasion ensued. Around this time of year, I’m reminded of how truly unique our campus is and of the investment our community makes in contributing to the student experience. Our community of faculty, staff, students and leaders always go above and beyond in ensuring student success and experience is at the forefront of everything we do.
Whether we’re celebrating culture with Celebration of Nations, supporting successful futures by hosting record-breaking (no, make that shattering) career fairs, welcoming fall with an Equinox and wellness fair event, or cheering our students on as they walk across the stage at commencement, staff are always there to ensure that distinctive student experience.
With these events, several of our incredible staff come to mind. Of course, the marketing and communications team, the registrar’s office, physical facilities, the provost’s office, the career opportunities and employer relations team, and University Police and parking lot operations play a crucial role in planning and implementing campus events. Year after year, departments come together to exceed expectations and make sure these experiences go off without a hitch, and it’s often the many moving parts behind the scenes that ensure success.
In addition to these critical departments, many staff volunteer to support these efforts with zero work obligation to do so. Jody Seely, academic advisor for civil, architectural and environmental engineering, has volunteered for every career fair since 2016. Sarah Sullivan, office support assistant in electrical and computer engineering and Erica Reven, business technology analyst in information technology, always volunteer to work commencement. Last year, Lisa Winstead, program and project support coordinator for S&T’s Center for Intelligent Infrastructure, Shari Hill, assistant director for graduate admissions, and Emma Lowe, associate director for doctoral recruitment, stepped up tremendously to make sure Celebration of Nations was all it could be.
The student-focused, service-minded staff at Missouri S&T are truly inspiring. While we often are the behind-the-scenes workers, it’s so fulfilling to see our students grow and find success. Please know your work and volunteerism does not go unnoticed and staff like you make S&T the best.
