We kicked off 2023 with the launch of Staff Council’s first monthly newsletter, new pens delivered to all staff, and the conclusion of the inaugural Personal Effectiveness Workshop, part of the newly launched Leadership Development Series.
As Chancellor Dehghani mentioned in his Jan. 27 email, the Leadership Development Series is an opportunity for faculty and staff to master essential SKAs (skills, knowledge and abilities) of effective leadership. Cindi Nelson, S&T’s chief human resources officer, has done an incredible job of taking this idea and developing thoughtful and substantial modules for staff and faculty leadership development.
Thirteen staff completed the first Personal Effectiveness Workshop and recommend others take advantage of this opportunity. The workshop used the DiSC assessment to provide foundational knowledge in understanding your communication style and personality type and how you relate to others. Understanding the different styles can lead to more effective communication and less conflict. The class also provided opportunities for self-reflection and a chance to analyze leaders, which many noted as a fun and informative addition.
The Personal Effectiveness Workshop is the foundation of the Leadership Development Program, which has two development tracks. If you are interested in improving your leadership skills or have a desire to get a deeper understanding of how to work more efficiently with others, I encourage you to participate in these opportunities for leadership and professional development. Learn more on the Leadership Development Series webpage.
Cheers,
Megan Fowler President of Staff Council

Get involved with Staff Council

The February Staff Council meeting was held Thursday, Feb. 9.
Dr. Aaron Zalis, director of South Central Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC), gave an overview of the work the center provides to educators including a variety of workshops to support teachers at all levels of their professional careers. The president’s report included a summary of the Staff Council officers’ Jan. 31 meeting with UM System President Mun Choi and S&T Chancellor Mo Dehghani and an introduction of the ad-hoc election committee, who is tasked with coordinating this year’s Staff Council election. The business portion of the meeting continued the VSE (vision, strategy, execution) discussion and how to create more opportunities for staff awards on campus.
The next Staff Council meeting is at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 9, on Zoom. Everyone is welcome to attend.
